Jahed Choudhury, 24-year-old man has become the first gay Muslim in the United Kingdom to have a same-sex marriage with his boyfriend who he has been with for two years.
19-year-old Sean Rogan caught Jahed crying on the beach and that’s what led to the beginning of their relationship. Keeping it a low key affair, Jahed tied the knot with Sean at Walsall registry office while being dressed in traditional attire. After years of being bullied and ostracized for being ‘gay,’ Jahed finally found a partner he can spend his life with.
“This is about showing people I don’t care. My family… think it’s a disease and can be cured, some of my family still call it a phase. I want to say to all people going through the same thing that’s it’s okay – we’re going to show the whole world that you can be gay and Muslim,” said Jahed.
Apart from being told that he was suffering from a ‘disease,’ he was also sent on a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia to be treated for his sexual orientation.
Jahed even described the moment he met Sean, “I’d not long overdosed and I was crying on a bench and Sean came over and asked if I was okay. He gave me hope at one of my lowest points and he’s stood by me all the way.”
“I stood out like a sore thumb – I never liked football, I preferred watching fashion shows on TV. I remember feeling trapped,” he continued.
He added, “It went all over school, people would spit on me, empty the rubbish bins on me, call me pig and the Muslim people would shout ‘harum‘ – which is a very nasty insult in my language.”
It had become so bad that he was asked his change his social circle, his entry was restricted in the mosque he visited for 15 years, and was even asked to take medication for this ‘problem.’
Due to all these difficulties, Jahed said he suffers from post-traumatic disorder because of which he finds it extremely difficult to face people alone. Sometimes it even hampers his work.
But who’d have thought that a suicidal man would become the first in a country to have same-sex marriage. More power to you, Jahed. We’re glad you didn’t give up on life and embraced your sexuality giving zero fucks to the world. You’re truly going to be an inspiration to all those struggling with their sexualities.
